Migraines Q & A

What are Common Triggers for Migraines?

Migraines can have a wide variety of triggers. Bright lights, strong odors, injuries to the neck and shoulders, and high levels of stress are all capable of creating an environment that is conducive to a migraine. It may take some time, but once a patient’s triggers are identified, they may be able to reduce the risk of a migraine simply by avoiding the things that cause them. If the cause is related to the physical structure of the body and the amount of stress or strain it is exposed to, chiropractic adjustments and deep tissue massage may be able to alleviate some of the problem. Chronic neck pain that leads to a migraine may be treated with physical therapy as well.

How are Migraines Treated?

Avoiding the triggers that can cause migraines is the key form of treatment. When that isn’t possible, there are many medications that can help to control the pain, but the most important part of any treatment plan is diagnosing and treating the cause. If the cause is an environmental issue, controlling a person’s surroundings is extremely important. If the cause has to do with the structure or performance of the body, correcting those issues should lead to relief. Chiropractic adjustments and physical therapy may be able to help restore the balance that is needed within the neck, shoulders, and back to help control a person’s migraine pain.

Can Migraines be Related to Neck and Back Injuries?

Individuals who have suffered neck and back injuries and deal with constant, chronic pain are more susceptible to migraines and other types of headaches. Neck and back injuries are often accompanied by inflammation. When inflammation is present, it can put pressure on the nerves and blood vessels that travel to and from the brain. If the inflammation becomes severe, blood flow will be dramatically decreased, depriving the brain of the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function efficiently. The longer the blood supply is diminished, the more likely it is that the patient will develop a migraine or other type of headache pain.
